Important Facts
- It is important to stress that llamas are herd animals with great social interactivity and should, therefore, be kept with at least one other llama. (The exception is if the llama is being kept as a guard llama amongst sheep, where the sheep become his family). It is not fair to the llama to be kept alone. If you have a lone llama, it would be nice to bring in another llama. Consideration should be made, however, to the adjustment period required for the llamas to become acquainted and they should be kept separately but near each other for a week or two.
- Never over-pet a baby llama! Sadly, it is common that due to unintentional ignorance and over-sensitivity by the owner, baby llamas are sometimes treated as cuddly toys and are over handled or bottle-fed. These animals can grow up to be extremely dangerous to humans. (See ´Berserk Syndrome´)
- It is a llama´s normal defence mechanism to spit and they will spit if they are feeling threatened or are frightened. It maybe that the owner needs to make some changes, not the llama.
